With all the talk about carbs these days, what would you say if you were told to eat a diet that was primarily 80 percent carbs? That’s the 80-10-10 diet, and it’s quite interesting. I’m a vegetarian, so I was intrigued automatically by the fact that it does leave out meat. This diet has a central focus on fruits and leafy green vegetables. Let’s discuss both the pros and cons of the 80-10-10 diet.
First, you might be wondering what the 10-10 means, if the 80 means the percentage of your diet that is made up of carbs. The 10-10 means the percentages of your diet that are made up of proteins and fats. That sounds a little too good to be true, right? In other words, is this a healthy diet? Does it really work? Can you stick with it, and should you?
Well, that’s why we are looking at the pros and cons. If there is one thing I’ve learned about dieting over the years is that the true goal is balanced eating. Sometimes you can take a little information here and there from different diets to form your unique overall plan for yourself. So, let’s take a closer look at this 80-10-10 diet. I might learn something, too.
First of all, if you do take a closer look, you’re going to discover that the 80-10-10 diet is actually a lifestyle plan and not just a simple diet. In other words, there are even recommended exercises and everything. One of the pros is that you would be eating only healthy foods. Nothing unhealthy is even on the list of foods to eat.
Another pro is that you are going to get plenty of vitamins and nutrients. Additionally, you don’t have to cook anything at all. Let’s examine some of the benefits that people talk about when following this lifestyle plan, and then we will get to the cons. First, people talk about improved digestion. They also mention increased energy, better mental clarity, and better sleep, too.
Imagine eating 20 bananas in one sitting. While I like bananas, I already know that wouldn’t be possible for me. I have discovered when eating yogurt, granola, and fruit in large quantities that the bananas are in fact that culprit that gives me indigestion. I thought it was the yogurt at first, but I will stop the side story there. The fact of the matter is one of the cons is that you have to eat a ton of fruit.
You might not think that’s a bad thing, but just wait to see how much fruit you have to eat to get your calories. Plus, you are going to be consuming a ton of natural sugar. People call into question the ratio, too, when pointing out the cons of this diet.
That was one thing I was going to say initially. It seems to me that we as humans would need more protein, right? What do you think of the 80-10-10 diet?
